D8568 BR Blue Black Backpack

A recent request we had was for a Class 17 Clayton. The Class 17 definitely falls into the ‘oddball’ category of locos!

Key Takeaways

  • The Class 17 Clayton loco was introduced in the early 1960s as part of British Railways diesel modernisation plan.
  • Despite 117 being ordered, Class 17 locos proved unreliable and underpowered, leading to early withdrawals.
  • I created a unique 3 quarter view design of the Class 17 available in both BR Blue and BR Green.
  • These new embroidered designs can be ordered on all our garments, hats, and bags.
  • Visit the Class 17 product pages to order or contact me for enquiries about the new designs or other railway items.

What Is A Class 17 Loco?

The Class 17 Clayton loco was a Type 1 loco introduced in the early 1960s as part of British Railways diesel modernisation plan.

At this time many innovative designs were produced and entered service with British Rail. Many alternative Type 1 locos of the time had single cabs towards one end of the loco.

The Class 17 had a central cab in an attempt to remove some of the operating difficulties a single cab loco suffered from.

Class 17 locos were used mainly in the far north of England and Scotland.

Despite 117 being ordered, they soon proved to be significantly unreliable and underpowered leading to a very short career.

Of all the loco classes introduced under this scheme, the Class 17s were probably the most unsuccesful.

After many problems the first withdrawls began a mere 5 years after introduction in 1968.

What Do The Class 17 Designs Look Like?

The Class 17 design I created was a 3 quarter view to allow the unique shape to be represented in full.

The design is available in both BR Blue and BR Green.
